"People will be gathered on the Day of Judgment barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised."* I said: O Messenger of Allah, men and women together, looking at each other?! He replied: "O ‘Ā’ishah, the situation will be too grave for them to be looking at each other."

"People will be gathered on the Day of Judgment barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised."* I said: O Messenger of Allah, men and women together, looking at each other?! He replied: "O ‘Ā’ishah, the situation will be too grave for them to be looking at each other."

‘Ā’ishah, the Mother of the Believers (may Allah be pleased with her) reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) say: "People will be gathered on the Day of Judgment barefooted, naked, and uncircumcised." I said: O Messenger of Allah, men and women together, looking at each other?! He replied: "O ‘Ā’ishah, the situation will be too grave for them to be looking at each other."

[Authentic hadith] [Narrated by Bukhari & Muslim]

Explanation

The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) described some of what will occur on the Day of Judgment—that people will be gathered after being resurrected from their graves for the reckoning. They will be barefoot, without shoes; naked, without clothing or covering; and uncircumcised, just as they were on the day their mothers gave birth to them. When the Mother of the Believers, ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), heard this, she said in astonishment: O Messenger of Allah, men and women together, looking at each other?! The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) explained to her that the situation of the standing (before Allah) and the gathering after resurrection will be filled with such terrifying events that people will be far too preoccupied to even notice the nakedness of others.

Benefits

A depiction of the terrors of the Day of Judgment, and that nothing will distract a person from his own reckoning and deeds on that Day.

Emphasizing the fact that a person only falls into sin when he is in a state of heedlessness; for if he were to remember the greatness of the One he disobeys, or His punishment, he would not neglect His remembrance, gratitude, or proper worship—even for the blink of an eye. That is why, on the Day of Resurrection, people will be entirely preoccupied with themselves, such that they will not even look at one another.

The intense modesty of women during the time of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him). Here is ‘Ā’ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), asking with modest hesitation when she hears that all people will be resurrected on the Day of Judgment unclothed, both men and women.

As-Sindi said: Everyone will be preoccupied with his own condition and will not be aware of his brother’s state. Allah Almighty says: {On that day, everyone will have enough concern of his own.} [Surat ‘Abasa: 37] No one will pay attention to the nakedness of another.

Khitān (circumcision): For males, it is the cutting of the skin that covers the glans (the tip of the male organ). For females, it is the removal of the small fold of skin above the point of penetration, which resembles a rooster's comb.
