Setting
1- Indeed, patience is at the first shock
2- Bilāl was ordered to pronounce the Adhān in pairs and the Iqāmah in singles
3- Get up and I will lead you in prayer
4- If your wife asks your permission to go to the mosque, do not prevent her
5- I prayed with Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthmān and I did not hear any one of them recite "In the name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful"
6- O Messenger of Allah, verily, Allah does not feel shy of the truth. If a woman had a wet dream, would it be obligatory on her to take a ritual bath? He replied: Yes, if she sees vaginal fluid
7- Whoever is tried by having daughters and he treats them kindly, they will be a screen for him from Hellfire
8- The ornament of the believer will reach as far as his ablution reaches
9- I used to wash the traces of semen from the garment of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he would go out to the prayer with water spots on his garment
10- The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) did not observe a voluntary prayer more regularly than the two Rak‘ahs of Fajr
11- Praying in congregation is twenty-seven degrees better than praying alone
12- Why does the menstruating woman make up for her missed fasts but does not make up for the missed prayers? She said: Are you a Harūriyyah? I said: I am not a Harūriyyah, but I am just asking. She said: That would happen to us, so we were ordered to make up for the fasts but were not ordered to make up for the prayers.
13- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to pour water over his head thrice
14- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to recline in my lap and recite the Qur'an during my menstruation
15- The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Zhuhr prayer at the time of intense heat, and the ‘Asr prayer at the time when the sun was clear, and the Maghrib prayer when its time was due
16- A baby boy was brought to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and he urinated on the Prophet's clothes. So, he asked for water and sprinkled it over it
17- I came to the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) when he was in a red leather tent. Bilāl stepped out with ablution water (that was left over from the Prophet's ablution. There were some people who managed to get some of it (seeking its blessing), whereas others just received a sprinkle of it
18- If he sits between her four limbs and exerts himself, the ritual bath becomes obligatory
19- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to offer the Fajr prayer while some women from among the believers, wrapped in their garments, would attend the prayer with him. Then they would return to their homes, and no one would recognize them because of the darkness
20- Practice archery, O progeny of Isma‘īl; your forefather was an archer
21- The best charity is providing the shade of a tent in the cause of Allah, or providing a servant for one who strives in the cause of Allah, or providing a young she-camel for one striving in the cause of Allah
22- He did a little but was greatly rewarded
23- I have told you repeatedly to use the tooth-stick
24- Do not be importunate in asking (for something), for by Allah, if one of you asked me for something and I gave it to him while I am reluctant, there will be no blessing in what I gave him
25- Goodness is tied to the forelocks of horses until the Day of Resurrection
26- Allah forgives everything for the martyr except the debt
27- The upper hand is better than the lower hand; the upper hand is the giving hand, and the lower hand is the begging hand
28- His wealth is whatever he spends during his life, while the wealth of his heir is whatever he leaves after his death
29- Make haste to perform the Witr prayer before the morning
30- O Banu Salimah, stay in your neighborhood, your footsteps are recorded for you; stay in your neighborhood, your footsteps are recorded for you
31- Fight in the cause of Allah, for he who fights in the Cause of Allah for a period of time equal to that between two milkings of a she-camel, will be surely admitted to Paradise
32- When one of you stands up for offering voluntary prayer at night and finds it difficult to recite the Qur'an accurately, and he is unaware of what he is reciting, he should lie down
33- May Allah have mercy upon Mūsa! He was hurt more than this but remained patient
34- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to leave fasting in a certain month until we would think that he has not fasted at all that month; and he used to fast in another month so much that we would think he has not stopped fasting at all in that month. If one wished to see him praying at night, one could see him (in that state), and if one wished to see him sleeping at night, one could see him (in that state) too
35- There should be no envy except in two (cases): A man whom Allah has given wealth and he spends it in the right way, and a man whom Allah has given wisdom and he judges according to it and teaches it to others
36- He who weeps out of fear of Allah, will not enter the Hell till the milk returns into the udder
37- No one who enters Paradise would love to return to the life of this world even if he would be given everything that the world contains, except for the martyr. He will wish to return to the world and be killed ten more times on account of the honor that he will find
38- The example of a Mujāhid in the cause of Allah is like a person who keeps fasting, praying and reciting the verses of Allah unfailingly until the Mujāhid returns
39- If somebody keeps a horse in Allah's cause motivated by his faith in Allah and his belief in His promise, then he will be rewarded on the Day of Resurrection for what the horse has eaten or drunk and for its dung and urine
40- Whoever shoots an arrow in the cause of Allah will receive the same reward of freeing a slave
41- Paradise is guaranteed for any Muslim who fights in the cause of Allah for the length of time between two milkings of a she-camel. Anyone is wounded or injured in the cause of Allah, it will come on the Day of Judgment bleeding the most it ever bled, but its color will be like saffron and its fragrance will be like musk
42- What an excellent man ‘Abdullāh is if only he observes the night prayer
43- Nay, I saw him in the Fire because of a mantle – or a cloak – that he had taken without right (from the war spoils)
44- Which charity earns the greatest reward? He said: That you give charity when you are healthy and miserly, fearing poverty and hoping to become rich. Do not delay charity until your soul reaches up to the throat, and then you say: This is for so-and-so and this is for so-and-so. Lo, it has already come into the possession of so-and-so
45- Those who were not fasting today have taken all the reward
46- He stood such that the Ka‘bah was on his left and Mina was on his right then he said: This is the standing place of the one to whom Sūrat al-Baqarah was revealed
47- O people of the Ansār, did I not find you in a state of misguidance then Allah guided you aright through me? Were you not divided then Allah brought you together through me? Were you not in a state of poverty then Allah made you wealthy through me?
48- Whoever was in I‘tikāf with me should stay in I‘tikāf the last ten; for I was informed of that night, but I was then made to forget it. I saw myself prostrating in water and mud in its morning. So, seek it in the last ten
49- Take advantage of the concessions that Allah has granted you
50- We set out during the month of Ramadan with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) in such intense heat that one of us would place his hand over his head (to protect himself) against the excessive heat, and none of us was fasting except the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and ‘Abdullāh ibn Rawahah
51- No Zakah is to be paid by the Muslim on his slave or horse
52- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited Wisāl (continuous fasting for two days). So they said to him: But you practice Wisāl! He said: I am not like you. I am provided with food and drink (by my Lord)
53- Did the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prohibit the fasting of Friday? He said: Yes
54- Whoever dies while still having some fasts to make up for, his heir should fast on his behalf
55- O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died in a state that she had to observe the fast of a month. Should I complete it on her behalf? Thereupon he said: Would you not pay the debt if your mother had died without paying it? He said: Yes. He said: The debt of Allah is more worthy of being repaid
56- I heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) delivering a sermon at ‘Arafāt, in which he said: Whoever does not find slippers or sandals (Na‘l) may wear leather socks (Khuff), and whoever does not find a waist sheet (Izār) may wear pants (Sirwāl). He meant the pilgrim in the state of Ihrām
57- There is no compensation for one killed or wounded by an animal or by falling in a well or because of working in a mine, and one fifth is due on the buried treasure
58- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions arrived at Makkah assuming Ihrām for Hajj on the fourth day (of Dhu al-Hijjah). The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) ordered them to assume their Ihrām for ‘Umrah (instead of Hajj). They asked: O Messenger of Allah, to what extent should we lift the restrictions of Ihrām? He said: Lift the restrictions of Ihrām completely
59- How did the Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) travel (from ‘Arafah to Muzdalifah during Hajj)? He said: He would ride at a moderate pace, but when he saw a gap (in the crowd), he would hurry to fill it
60- The best (voluntary) fast in the sight of Allah is the fast of Dawūd, and the best (voluntary) prayer in the sight of Allah is the prayer of Dawūd. He used to sleep half of the night, stand to pray one third of it, and then sleep one sixth of it, and he used to fast every other day
61- There is no fasting superior to the fast of my brother Dawūd; fasting half of one's life by fasting one day and eating one day
62- Five animals are all vicious and harmful and are to be killed (even) inside the Sacred Precincts: the crow, the kite, the scorpion, the mouse, and the mordacious dog
63- He should not wear a shirt, a turban, trousers, a hooded cloak, or leather socks except if he cannot find sandals; he may wear leather socks after cutting them to make them lower than the ankles
64- If I had formerly known what I came to know lately, I would not have brought the sacrificial animal with me. Had there been no sacrificial animal with me, I would have ended my state of lhrām
65- The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us that during a journey we need not to take off our leather socks for up to three days and nights, except in case of major ritual impurity. In other cases such as sleeping, relieving oneself, or urinating, it is sufficient to wipe over leather socks
66- For you, Yazīd, is (the reward for) what you intended, and for you, Ma‘in, is what you took
67- The deeds of my Ummah, the good and the bad thereof, were presented to me. I found the removal of harm from the road among their good deeds, and the spittle in a mosque that was not buried among their bad deeds
68- The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to stand in prayer at night until the skin of his feet would crack
69- The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) offered the funeral prayer in absentia for the Negus, and I was in either the second or the third row
70- The places that are dearest to Allah are the mosques, and the places that are most hateful to Allah are the markets
71- War is deception
72- In the time of the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) we would not find such food except rarely. So if we found it, we had no napkins except our palms, forearms, and feet. Then we would pray without making (a new) ablution
73- O Allah, forgive those of us who are living and those of us who are dead, those of us who are young and those who are old, those of us who are males and those who are females, and those of us who are present and those who are absent. O Allah, whoever of us You give life, let him live upon Islam, and whoever of us You take in death, let him die in a state of faith. O Allah, deprive us not of his reward, and subject us not to temptation after his death
74- O Allah, so-and-so the son of so-and-so is under Your protection and mercy. So, protect him from the trial of the grave and the torture of Hellfire. You are worthy of fulfilling promises and worthy of praise. O Allah, forgive him and have mercy upon him, as You are the Most Forgiving and the Most Merciful
75- Indeed, the eyes shed tears and the heart is grieved, and we do not say except what pleases our Lord. And indeed, over your departure, O Ibrahīm, we are grieved
76- A man came while the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was giving the Friday sermon. So he said to him: O So and so, have you prayed? He said: No. The Prophet said: Then get up and pray two Rak‘ahs
77- I accompanied the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) on his journeys, and he would not perform more than two Rak‘ahs. Abu Bakr, ‘Umar, and ‘Uthmān used to do the same
78- I prayed behind the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) the funeral prayer of a woman who died in her postpartum period, and he was standing by the middle of her body
79- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) appointed a man in charge of an army unit who led them in prayer; he always concluded his recitation with Sūrat al-Ikhlās
80- The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah; they do not eclipse on the death or life of anyone. So when you see that, supplicate to Allah, say Takbīr, pray, and give charity
81- I used to sleep in front of the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) with my legs in his prayer direction. When he wanted to prostrate, he would prod me so that I withdraw my feet, and when he stood up, I would stretch them. In those days, houses had no lamps
82- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) went out to invoke Allah for rain. He faced the direction of Qiblah as he was invoking Allah, and turned his upper garment inside out. Then he prayed two Rak‘ahs and recited the Qur'an out loud in both of them
83- I prayed with ‘Imrān ibn Husayn behind ‘Ali ibn Abi Tālib. When he prostrated, he made Takbīr, when he raised his head he made Takbīr, and when he stood up after two Rak‘ahs, he made Takbīr
84- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was shrouded in some white Yemeni garments, with neither a shirt nor a turban
85- I heard the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) reciting Sūrat At-Tūr in the Maghrib prayer
86- The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) Abu Bakr, and ‘Umar used to offer the Eid prayers before delivering the sermon
87- When the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, he used to combine the Zhuhr and ‘Asr prayers, as long as he was continuing with his journey, and also used to combine the Maghrib and ‘Ishā' prayers
88- Eat, drink, wear clothes, and give charity without extravagance or pride
89- I have never prayed behind an Imām who was more brief and more perfect in prayer than the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)
90- I will lead you in prayer; although I do not intend to pray, it is just to show you how I witnessed the Messenger of Allah pray
91- It would have been better if you had recited Sūrat al-A‘la, Sūrat Ash-Shams, or Sūrat al-Layl, for the old, the weak, and the needy pray behind you
92- The Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) announced the death of the Negus on the day he had died. He took the people to the prayer place, lined them up, and made four Takbīrs
93- We used to perform the Friday prayer with the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) and leave at a time when the walls had no shadow that we could take as shelter
94- The Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) used to deliver two sermons while standing, and he would separate them by sitting
95- The Messenger (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) prayed on the Day of An-Nahr, then delivered a sermon, then slaughtered (an animal) and said: Whoever slaughtered before praying should slaughter another animal instead, and whoever has not yet slaughtered should slaughter while mentioning Allah's name
96- Whoever sleeps and fails to recite his nightly portion, or part of it, and then recites it between the Fajr prayer and the Zhuhr prayer, it will be recorded for him as if he recited it during the night
97- As for this man, he has disobeyed the Prophet (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him)
98- I see that you like sheep and wilderness. So whenever you are with your sheep - or in the wilderness - and you want to call the Adhān, raise your voice
99- I gave the Messenger of Allah (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) a zebra as a gift
100- When one of you feels drowsy during prayer, let him lie down till drowsiness goes away from him
